How It Works: A Simple 5-Step Process

  2. Set Your Timer: Set a timer for 25 minutes. This is your Pomodoro.

  3. Work with Laser Focus: For the next 25 minutes, immerse yourself completely in the chosen task. Avoid all distractions. If an urgent thought or new task arises, jot it down to address later, but immediately return your attention to the current Pomodoro.

  4. Take a Short Break: Once the 25 minutes are up, the timer rings. Stop working immediately, even if you're in the middle of a sentence. Take a short 5-minute break. Stand up, stretch, grab a drink of water, or do something relaxing and unrelated to work. This helps prevent burnout and keeps your mind fresh.

  5. Repeat and Take Longer Breaks: After four Pomodoros (100 minutes of work and three 5-minute breaks), take a longer break of 15-30 minutes. This extended break allows for deeper rest and mental reset before you begin your next set of Pomodoros.

  • Don't Break a Pomodoro: The golden rule is to complete the 25 minutes. If interrupted, either finish the current Pomodoro and note the interruption, or "reset" the Pomodoro if the interruption is significant.

  • Use the Breaks Wisely: Your breaks are for stepping away from work, not checking social media or emails. Let your mind truly rest.

  • Adjust as Needed: While 25/5 is the classic, feel free to experiment with slightly different timings (e.g., 30/7 or 40/10) to find what works best for your personal focus span and task complexity.
